Another restaurant venture by chef Tyler Fenton (Reilly Pizza), Bata was a harmonious collaborative design/build with Fenton’s conceptual vision and our freedom to execute creative ideas. From their website: “[BATA’s] menu is a celebration of our region. We source 90% of our products from within 400 miles of the restaurant, with the majority coming from much closer. Our menu is an organic flow based on what is best on any given day. Our menu is largely vegetable focused. We offer rotating proteins with an emphasis on fish and pork. We work with local farms to celebrate the best of what they have, highlighting both the broader season as well as the micro seasons. We buy whole pigs from E & R Pork, butcher them in house and treat each cut differently. Our seafood comes from San Diego. We cook over an oak fueled fire, and some element of each dish has been touched by this fire. What is on the menu one day may not be the next. We recognize this menu format may be a bit adventurous for some guests, in an era where preplanning is the norm. The pieces were rescued from a large property east of Tucson. They had been exposed to the weather for years; bone-dry, splitting/cracking, rickety, (some in multiple pieces) & destined for the dump. We refinished & re-built the wood frames, re-designed the couch, & built a custom coffee table out of side table remnants & various ranch oak scraps. Bob Hunter (longtime leatherworker & Sean's father) crafted the lounger & couch cushions: upholstery leather with canvas back & built in zipper. Zander and Heidi had the dream to bring the old Patagonia Lumber building back to life as a gathering place around coffee/beer/food/music/vibes. They achieved their vision and now have a special hub in the quaint southern AZ town. We had the opportunity to custom design/build the bar stools and community table for PLco. The Presta roasting space is a hidden gem in the Tucson coffee scene- tucked away in an inconspicuous midtown location, behind a modern facade in repp + mclain architects office building. The space was a blank slate at the beginning: a white rectangular room with endless possibilities. Once a design was narrowed down, the transformation result was a modern+rustic breath of fresh air. An avid Volkswagen guy, he always wanted a VW van, especially one built into his business. When he bought it, the whole thing inside & out needed a face lift. We took on the project and pushed through the obstacles along the way to bring the coffee van to life. Our scope included exterior re-paint, redoing interior panels, upholstery, stereo system, installing power inverter, new flooring, wood slat accents, wood vent covers, & removable coffee bar tray for rear access.
